My visit at the “emergency” project had the effect of a starting point for me to contemplate on the role of contemporary art. It is strongly alleged that artistic products correspond, more and more, to concrete social or private pressing needs. The old doctrine on the lack of “practical usefulness” of art becomes faint, day by day. The audience is bored by the formalistic and directed approach that the media follow to display and comment the news. On the other hand, academic art seems to exploit with an inappropriate delay all the primary stuff that everyday life provides. “Emergency” art may not be addressed to mainstream collectors, since it attempts to develop an alternative audience with a bit more “consuming” intentions. Nevertheless, I wish to see this kind of pieces of work to places with wide public access. It is a current material; it does not belong to museums. The cow parade project last year was one widely welcomed event. This year, the “emergency” project is a more political and critical successor. It would be very promising if the “emergency” project becomes an established institution of public life, recognizable by people that are looking for the artist’s sensitive comment.
